I’m just going to share this link for your reading enjoyment and to hopefully, inspire many POC authors and readers to create and demand diverse stories readers can relate to. Growing up, I read many, many stories featuring white characters. And yes, I enjoyed them. And had no problems with reading about them. These were stories, situations, events that affected their lives and something I could hopefully learn from and enjoy. But as I find myself growing older, I would love for the kids I tutor, the kids in my family, my future children, to be able to read stories about powerful, influential, and intelligent characters who reflect them.
A reader should be able to find enjoyment within a story regardless of the skin color of the cast of characters. But it’s not just about that. It’s about readers finding cultural and communal characteristics within stories. It’s about readers finding that their heritage is equally celebrated.
So without further ado, I’m proud to share my fellow author Tatiana White’s Hand Me Down Heroes or Progression blog post.
